Leadership Overview

Our Leadership
Parnassus
Preparatory School
was founded by three parents, Laura Bottenfield, Greg Friess, and Heather Ross. It is their mission and vision that shapes and influences the culture and leadership of the school. Parnassus is governed by the Board of Directors with support from board committees and the policies are implemented by the Executive Director.

The Board of Directors
The primary function of the Board is to uphold and support the vision and mission and philosophy of Parnassus. All decisions will be made in light of the mission, philosophy, goals and objectives of Parnassus as stated in the application. The framework document is a touchstone of all decisions made. The Board must ensure the provision of its quality educational program to all students at the school. Every decision or action taken by the Board must be made in the best interest of all Parnassus students – not what is in the interest of the Board, or the staff or the parents. The Board is responsible for providing strategic leadership for the school. It must plan for the long-term operation of the school. The Board is responsible for the oversight and approval of fund-raising, grant requests and direct donations. The Board will operate as a policy maker following the John Carver approach to board governance.

Standing Committees of the Board
Parnassus Standing Committees were defined and approved in the school charter application to Friends and MDE and are listed below. These committees are active or dormant in response to the request of the Board and to support the needs of the Board. Committees have objectives, strategies, and a preferred set of experiences, skills, and backgrounds for participation in order to better serve the Board. Committees have non-voting power, report to the Board of Directors, and must comply with the Open Meeting Law.

  • Budget, Finance, and Audit Committee
  • Governance, Nominating, Policies Committee
  • Marketing and Communication Committee

Advisory Groups have non-voting power, work as a request from the Executive Director, Principal, or Board of Directors in support of school needs, and do not comply with Open Meeting Law. Examples are Facility and Uniform groups.

The Executive Director
The Executive Director is the intellectual academic leader of the school with a philosophical understanding of the classical trivium - liberal arts education. The Executive Director implements the curriculum as defined by the classical trivium-liberal tradition and is accountable to the Board of Directors.  While the primary focus of this role is that of the academic leader, the Executive Director is also responsible for the oversight of discipline, moral culture, and financial priorities of the school.
